Truecaller, the popular caller ID app, is taking AI integration a step further. Partnering with Microsoft, Truecaller now allows its paid users to answer calls using a synthetic version of their own voice. This groundbreaking feature utilizes Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology, a part of Azure AI Speech.
How Truecaller’s AI-Powered Assistant Works
The process is simple. Users record a short script in their voice, granting permission for Truecaller to create a digital copy. This allows the AI-powered Assistant to greet and respond to callers using the user’s voice, in addition to the existing system-generated voice options.
While the initial greeting is a standard template to avoid confusion, users can customize subsequent responses. This level of personalization offers a unique and efficient way to manage calls.
Ethical Considerations and Transparency
To ensure transparency, Truecaller has implemented measures to identify the voice as a digital replica. The company has restricted the introductory greeting template for personal voice usage, making it clear to the caller that they are interacting with a synthesized voice.
Furthermore, Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology incorporates watermarks into the generated speech. This allows detection tools to identify the audio as synthetic, addressing potential ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI-generated voices.
A Future of Personalized Call Management
This innovative feature signifies a potential shift in how we manage our calls. As Raphael Mimoun, Product Director and General Manager of Truecaller Israel, stated, “We firmly believe that the personal voice feature will revolutionize the way our users manage their calls and elevate their overall experience with Truecaller Assistant.”
Truecaller’s commitment to exploring AI-powered voice technologies, alongside its partnership with Microsoft, suggests a future of increasingly personalized and efficient communication tools. This move places Truecaller at the forefront of a technological wave poised to reshape our interactions with our devices and each other using AI.
